Choosing the right mode of transport for your horses or ponies is a big decision and shouldn’t be taken lightly.
Firstly try to look at this from the point of view of your animal; is the trailer or horse boxes you buy safe, secure and comfortable? The construction of trailers doesn’t always make it the most comfortable experience. Small enclosed spaces are unkind to horses, it goes against their nature to be in an enclosed space. Animals that are not experienced with travelling will find it difficult to balance, potentially causing problems when you reach your destination and for future health. Although horse boxes are much bigger than trailers, the consensus of opinion is that they offer a smoother and more comfortable ride for the Horses.
Horse boxes (or horse trucks) offers more security. Most horses/ponies will stand longer in a box than a trailer. The stability of the horse box on uneven roads (especially in this country) makes a real difference, no frayed nerves to deal with on arrival. Horses and ponies can refuse to get into a trailer, this is not uncommon, but very rare in a horse box. An added bonus is the living space that good horse boxes can provide. If you are planning to stay overnight, for instance, the cost can be reduced by spending the night in the living quarters of the vehicle, and you stay to your animals.
Make sure the horse box or trailer is the right size for your horse, also the floor needs to be in good condition. Here at Cedars Farm we fit thick rubber light weight / heavy duty matting to the floor. Once loaded, drive safely, you and your horse are precious cargo. Allow yourself plenty of time to get to your event. Drive smoothly and avoid any sudden breaking. Check the road conditions and weather conditions on the day, and always watch your speed. The horse has to remain standing and keep his balance; it is up to you help him do so.
All of our horse boxes are fitted with fibre glass skirts, it is superior to aluminium and therefore we guarantee your paintwork will look as good as new in five years time.
There are many considerations to be made before buying a horse box, budgets are usually the first alongside passenger safety and the welfare of the horses in transit. Please give us a call to discuss your requirements in more detail.
